Artist Statement

I use a variety of medias to address themes of humanity and identity of the personal and public. I enjoy producing work that is enjoyable and easily accessible for the viewer. Isolated Dis-Play: Booth 1, is an interactive sculpture merging both museum display cabinet and isolation booth into one.

The cabinet contains a common tool. This tool has been fragmented into bone like pieces. The viewer is invited to place their hands in the gloves and assemble and reassemble the work.

The course I nominate if successful is a Puppet Making Course held in Prague. The course includes guidance in traditional wood working techniques including carving and designing as well as attending lectures and performances.

For the past year I have been developing a Marionette making program in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. With this project in mind the course in Prague would be of great benefit. It would also greatly inform and excel my sculptural practice.

Judge's Statement

I was drawn to Ange's work not only because it is a beautiful
object in and of itself, but also because of the interactive component that entices viewers to 'play' with her sculpture.

Few artists can bridge the gap between the untouchable art object and one that is specifically to-be-touched; Ms. Leech has accomplished just this.

I was also inspired to grant this award to Ms. Leech based on her artist statement, which outlined her desire to travel to Prague for a puppet making workshop that would bring her practice to a new level.

I think it's imperative that Australian artists study abroad and I wish her luck in this endeavour and look forward to seeing the subsequent results.
